Commonly Asked Questions

How can strength training improve my metabolism?
Building muscle from weight training is like horse power for your body. The more muscle you build, the more calories you need to maintain that muscle. Your metabolic rate is simply how quickly your body burns calories. As your body composition improves so does your metabolism.

Won't I get bulky from weight training?
No, this only happens when a person consumes too much food or the wrong food. Enhancement drugs and supplements will also cause the body to retain water and appear more bulky.

 What's the healthiest food?
Superfoods contain more nutrition per calorie than any other food. Their high-impact nutrition has proven health benefits, such as preventing heart disease, cancer, and memory loss. Superfoods  such as berries, spinach, kale, and broccoli are loaded with fiber antioxidants, and micronutrients for optimal health and well being.

What is a H.I.S.T workout?
It's an advanced form of strength training. Unlike H.I.I.T. which is interval training, H.I.S.T. (High Intensity Strength Training) is putting all your effort into one set to complete failure. Once you have finished the set, if you feel that you are ready for a second set, then you could not have possibly gone all-out during the  first set.
The workout is 50% - 75% warm up followed by 2-5 minutes to perform one set. It's similar to a sprinter vs. a marathon runner, you perform a short explosive workout with the maximum weight you can safely push or pull.

I'm nearing retirement, am I too old to start a strength training program?
Absolutely not, it's never to late to start. I work with many clients that have no experience, it's important to be patient and progress at a slower rate to prevent injuries. The sooner you start the sooner you will begin improving strength, bone density, body mechanics, and metabolism!

What's the difference between personal training and personal coaching?
Not everyone wants to hire personal trainer, but the workout program they dedicate hours a week to isn't producing significant results. The solution is simple, I can provide coaching assistance to help structure a better workout plan and review your nutrition so you will start seeing weekly progression toward your goal.

If I just eat less won't I lose weight?
Yes, but what happens when you hit a plateau? Adding cardio and cutting more calories will work for a while, but eventually you will stop losing weight all together. Skipping meals and calorie restrictions cause more muscle loss than fat loss. Loss of muscle will slow down your metabolism which makes it difficult to lose body fat.
Consuming properly balanced nutrition will ensure long-term sustainable success. I believe that teaching others to develop a healthy lifestyle is the most sensible approach, not fad diets with endless restrictions.

How is it possible to see results exercising one hour a week?
There is an exorbitant amount exercise programs available to suit everyone's needs. I've personally utilized dozens over the course of 15 years, but
never achieved my intended goal. Science has proven that short high intensity exercise is more beneficial than long workouts with minimal effort. Studies have shown that H.I.T. outperforms conventional exercise in strength, endurance, V02 max, and BMI. In a nutshell, if there is no challenge, there will be no change! So a workout that maximizes your effort will create the most change.
My methodology uses evidence-based training programs that deliver results in as little as one hour a week. The innovative workouts I have developed over the past 20 years are suitable for all ages, genders, and fitness levels. The exercise will challenge you and create changes in your body you never thought were possible.

I do cardio exercise daily and can't lose weight!
You can never out-train a bad diet regardless of how much exercise you do. If your body's nutritional needs are not being met, you will struggle to lose weight. By spending more time with meal planning and less time in a gym you will begin experiencing significant weight loss every week.
The fastest weight loss will come from stepping up your effort to HIT or HIIT workouts along with improving your nutrition. You might also want to try a spin class if you find it difficult to push yourself to the next level.

Are supplements safe? Do they work?
To the best of my knowledge supplements are safe. It's rare for someone to die from supplements, but millions have died from prescription drugs. Supplements aren't regulated so it's best to research the reputation of the company and verify the source of the ingredients.
There's a lot of fad products that marketing geniuses have somehow convinced consumers to spend billions on every month that deliver no real results. The vast majority of these supplements are not only worthless, they're toxic! They contain inferior ingredients, artificial sweeteners, dyes, fillers, preservatives, and heavy metals. By reading labels and doing a little research you can determine the products nutritional quality.

Is cardio or weight training better for losing body fat?

Cardio routines are essential for heart health and provide a sense of instant gratification because our fitness equipment and apps tell us we are burning a lot of calories. But all that "sweat equity" isn't that efficient in the end. While cardio gives you that satisfying short-term burn, strength training provides better long-term results. Strength training builds bone density along with muscle tissue, which greatly improves your metabolic rate. This results in more calories burned throughout the day, as well as at rest on the couch!
