Trigger Point Therapy

Picture
When muscles become shortened (tight) and don't respond well to different forms of stretching, Trigger Point Therapy can be the solution. If you force a muscle to stretch that isn't responding by regaining its length, serious injury can happen if the trigger points aren't released first. A Trigger Point is like a hot spot or sensitive area in a muscle that is painful when pressure is applied to it. They can develop for numerous reasons, such as:
  • Inactivity (sitting too much)
  • Overactivity (too much exercise)
  • Trauma (injury or car accident)
When steady pressure is applied to a Trigger
  • Tight muscle will relax
  • Muscle pain will subside
  • Muscle will regain its length by stretching
  • Muscle will regain its strength
Another method I utilize is the Active Release Technique. It is similar to Trigger Point Therapy except I force joint movement to contract and relax muscle while holding pressure on a specific spot to effectively release the tight muscle. Foam rollers and roller sticks certainly have some benefits in this area, but these devises are not nearly as effective as A.R.T. and T.P.T.
